We are glad to have caught your attention.
We would like to present you a great alternative to a drab summer.
An attractive international summer university taking place in Ljubljana:
Brave New Europe - At the Crossroads; where fates, peoples, nations
and organizations meet or separate. It is a youth run and initiated
activity. Last year we have set ourselves a goal - to provide a
program that would be an innovative course on European affairs in
three major categories: politics (in relation to history), economy
(of a unifying market and transition) and society & arts (identity
and culture).
University IS by definition a union of professors and students
in intellectual curiosity and learning. (This is a summer university
it includes summer activities as well!) We are trying to live up
to that definition. We will divide the proceedings into a 3-day
conference, a relaxing weekend and a week long student university
(lectures and workshops). We are building a great program with speakers
from all over Europe. We will put them behind a table and hear them
confronting each other. In workshops we will have presentations
and discussions on various subjects. We are also working toward
organizing receptions at institutions, ministries and NGOs.
Besides improving our knowledge we hope to inspire and empower
our fellow Young Europeans to play an important role in society.
We are encouraging youth activism, intellectual creativity, courage
and ethics. Last year we wrote a manifesto of a beautiful future.
We are aspiring to build bridges across civilization gaps, we are
distributing hope and self confidence, we are emancipating youth
from the burdens of traditional animosities and rigidity. We are
stepping out of everyday and devising a new day. We strive to have
debates that change the way people think or make them know they
think alike when they argue.
THEMES DISCUSSED: 2003 is an extremely important year, with tectonic
shifts changing the geopolitical and socio-economic situation in
Europe. Becoming part of EU is no longer a dream for many nations,
but it still may prove to be a nightmare for some. While iron curtain
has vanished, differences remain. A new wall is emerging further
south and further east. Skeptics may suspect a glass wall emerging,
preventing Eastern folk from becoming equal citizens. Warsaw pact
is gone and NATO is admitting new members, IRAQ is about to be attacked
and EU is again taking care of Bosnia's security. Are EU and NATO
compatible or are they very different? What is going on between
organizations and nations, their relations within and without? When
will EU encompass the whole continent? Its economy is becoming weary.
The present situation may not at all be in favor of young people,
slow growth and unemployment are diminishing our future prospects.
While the east is lagging behind it may bounce back and stimulate
the continent's economy growth. Having all above mentioned questions
in mind: are youth's interests fully understood, are they responsibly
dealt with? Is arguing with our parents similar to what we should
do with our politicians? What is about to happen to our future?
What can we, what should we do?

APPLICATION & SCOLARSHIPS: What will the applicant have to
do? Well first of all apply. The criteria of selection will be:
application form, CV, a concise essay (3 pages max. To be published
in a compendium. Various themes and subject will be considered,
but primarily those mentioned in the call for applications or very
specific from your own research projects) and additionally: workshop
proposals and the ability to raise funds.
The scholarship fund will be limited. Those who will be able to
cover their expenses will have an easier job applying. We are kindly
asking those who can afford to, to do so, in order to let someone
who otherwise might not come (we are having in mind students from
eastern regions of Europe) receive a scholarship. We are also suggesting,
to those who can, to apply to local funding institutions to help
them cover the expenses of travel and registration fee (covering
boarding costs) However, we will give special consideration to those
unable to provide the finances. If we will be successful in our
fund raising crusades we will be able to offer more scholarships
and subsidies, and a more illustrious side track program. e-mail:
