EU member states write to commission to oppose energy network break-up

Brussels (Thomson Financial) – Nine EU member states have written to the European Commission to oppose the break-up of energy producers and networks, the French minister for ecology said in a statement.

In January, the commission highlighted the need for “ownership unbundling”; the separation of production and supply activities from network operations of large energy groups such as Germany’s E.ON AG, France’s Gaz de France and Italy’s ENI to boost competition in the bloc.

The commission’s proposals were strongly opposed by several countries, led by France and Germany.
