The world can expect to see an acceleration of the effects of global warming. That is the conclusion of a UN climate panel in a report to be issued today at the end of an international conference in Paris. It is the starkest warning yet that human activities are causing global warming that may bring more droughts, heatwaves and rising seas.The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is regarded as the most representative and authoritative body on global warming in the world. The scientists now say there is a 90 percent probability humans have provoked the climactic upheaval. A previous study in 2001 indicated a 66 percent probability.
They have agreed a “best estimate” is that temperatures will rise by 3 Celsius over the next hundred years. Sea levels are expected to continue rising for centuries and extreme weather conditions will become more frequent. The Gulf Stream bringing warm waters to the North Atlantic could slow, though it is unlikely to stop completely, they say. The findings will put more pressure on governments and businesses to do more to curb greenhouse gases.
